City Year Greater Philadelphia, the Fox School of Business and Fox Net Impact partnered to host a Corporate Social Responsibility Breakfast on August 9^th. This breakfast was part of the orientation for new full time and international MBA students.

We were fortunate to have panelists from diverse organizations – all dedicated to CSR in distinct ways.

· Fred Maahs – Senior Director, Community Investment at Comcast

· John Campolongo – Product Manager at SEI Investments

· Ken Rosso – Sales Manager at Suntech

· Bill Goetz – Resident Vice President for State Government & Community Affairs at CSX

· Denise Bradley – Teva Pharmaceuticals

· Bev Dribin – Vice President of Community Relations for ARAMARK

The panel, moderated by Julie Appolloni from City Year Greater Philadelphia, provided insight into how corporations are strategically incorporating CSR to engage employees and to create positive impacts in the communities where they are located.

City Year and the partnerships they have formed with various corporations throughout the country offer an excellent example of how nonprofits and corporations can collaborate. To learn more about these public-private partnerships with City Year click here.

After the panel the students participated in a community service project with City Year Greater Philadelphia at Pleasant Hill Park (the Fish Hatchery – Linden and the Delaware River). With some great representatives from the Department of Recreation, the students cleared brush that was blocking access to the waterfront, cleaned out the old Fish Hatchery to prepare it for its next life, and removed debris around the public boat launch.

This is the second year that Fox School of Business has incorporated a day of community service into its orientation. This mix of service and CSR at the beginning of these students’ MBA education emphasizes Fox’s commitment to sustainability and business. Fox Net Impact is proud to support and participate in this continued tradition!

“The grant will be used to significantly ramp-up residential and commercial building energy efficiency [...]]]> “It was announced today that the City of Philadelphia, along with its partners in the Metropolitan Caucus and a coalition of public, private, and non-profit partners, have received a $25 million “Recovery Through Retrofit” grant from the US Department of Energy.” 

“The grant will be used to significantly ramp-up residential and commercial building energy efficiency retrofit activities throughout the greater Philadelphia region, creating hundreds of jobs and saving the region millions in energy costs over the next several years.”

Another Earth Day (4/22/10) is upon us. And this year, it is the 40th anniversary! For some guidance on how to best appreciate the environment, check out the following events throughout the region.

On 4/22

- Earth Day Film Series at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute: In celebration of Earth Day, Bryn Mawr Film Institute is partnering with Whole Foods Market for a day of films devoted to the future of food. From the kid-friendly documentary What’s On Your Plate?, to the environmentally-themed classic science fiction film Silent Running, the Earth Day Film Festival offers a wide range of fare aimed at raising awareness of food and sustainability. Individual and day passes are available–get more ticketing information here. A portion of proceeds will benefit The Food Trust .

- Earth Day at Whole Foods Callowhill: Share your environmental pledge for our Earth Day "Pledge Board," and  have a chance to swap your hazardous household cleaning product for one that’s more environmentally friendly! There’s never a better time to break out your bike than on Earth Day! Ride on over for great deals and tons of fun! Inside, you can learn how to quench smart with SIGG USA, Eco-Friendly, Reusable Swiss Water Bottles and taste local produce samples! Kids can design their own celebratory 40^th Anniversary Earth Day poster to be hung for the remainder of Earth Month. Free and fun for the entire family!

- Go Green at the National Constitution Center. Find out more about the local community and how they can play a part in helping it “go green.” Community organizations will talk to visitors about their water, soil, and home environment, and will share tips on how to beautify the community and reduce carbon footprints. Visitors can also register to vote on site, to ensure that environmental concerns are heard on all levels, both locally and nationally.

– Climate Change: Its Impact… Our Action at the Franklin Institute: A discussion of future public policy. 7:00PM – Franklin theater. Cost: $10, Members: $7 Space is Limited, Call 215-448-1254 to register. Scientists all agree that climate change is a reality. What can be done to stabilized the rate of climate change? How can we change models for living in the Greater Philadelphia region with a smaller carbon footprint? In this lively discussion and debate, learn more about the science behind climate change as well as the range of innovative policy solutions related to building practices, water usage, food distribution and energy production and distribution.

- Beyond Fair Trade: Global Poverty Reduction, Agro-enterprise, Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility. Earth Day Symposium at Villanova University from 1-5:15pm.

The Recycling Office of the City of Philadelphia is set to launch the largest-ever anti-litter campaign – consisting of spoken word compositions and performances of five Philly street poets chosen for power, not prettiness.

The campaign includes TV, radio and transit ads. Twitter, Facebook and YouTube will also be utilized to increase exposure. Street poetry events [...]]]>

Mr. Suri is currently president and owner of National Plastics & Manufacturing, a post-industrial plastics recycling company located in Easton, PA.  National Plastics provides recycling services to regional manufactures and distributors and sells reprocessed resins to customers worldwide. Mr. Suri is an advocate of keeping and growing niche manufacturing businesses in the region. He earned his MBA in Finance from Temple University’s Fox School of Business and a BS in Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
